چکیده
Recently, a two-phase handoff protocol has been proposed to support inter-switch handoff in wireless ATM networks. It employs path extension for each inter-switch handoff, followed by path optimization if necessary. In this paper, we propose a number of path optimi, zation initiation schemes to facilitate the two-phase handoff protocol. The design objective is to determine the time to invoke path optimization such that the average cost per connection is minimized. Three path optimization schemes, namely: periodic, exponential, and Bernoulli, are proposed. A discrete-event simulation model is developed to compare their performance. Simulation results indicate that the Bernoulli path optimization scheme outperforms the other two schemes by providing a lower average cost per connection.

متن کاملA Path Optimization Signaling Protocol for Inter-Switch Handoff in Wireless ATM Networks1
In this paper, we study the connection rerouting problem due to inter-switch handoffs. The design objective is to guarantee the bandwidth and delay of a connection during its connection lifetime. We propose to use path extension for each inter-switch handoff, and invoke path optimization whenever one of the potential handoff paths exceed the delay constraint. During path extension, the selectio...

متن کاملA Two-Phase Inter-Switch Handoff Scheme for Wireless ATM Networks
Supporting mobility in Wireless ATM networks poses a number of technical issues. An important issue is the ability to reroute ongoing virtual connections during handoff as mobile users move among base stations. We propose a two-phase inter-switch handoff scheme using permanent virtual paths reserved between adjacent Mobility Enhanced Switches (MES). The virtual paths are used in the first phase...
متن کاملUplink-Downlink Imbalance in TDMA Personal Communication Systems - Universal Personal Communications, 1998. ICUPC '98. IEEE 1998 International Conference on
An important aspect of any channel assignment algorithm should be balancing the performance of uplink and downlink. Differences in receiver performance, diversity and transmit power used at mobiles and base stations are potential sources of imbalance. In addition, there is a fundamental asymmetry between uplink and downlink interference caused by the locations of mobiles and base statiams. We i...
